It's such a rare thing to watch the building from scratch of a 21st Century law school that it's worth noting that the newest institution on the block just took another big bound: The year-old school, under Dean Irwin Cherminsky's leadership, just saw its tenured faculty increase by almost half again, adding seven new professors. That, the school says, gives it 22 tenure-track faculty and a student-professor ratio of 3-to-1, numbers that would be tough to top by any spot in the nation. Besides being a diverse and high-powered scholarly and practical crew, the incoming faculty arrive from law schools at Stanford, Northwestern, NYU, UT, Notre Dame and UC Davis. Seems as if these latest appointments, which come at a time when most of the UC system faces dire budget cuts, also put far behind the initial missteps over the law school's leadership and mission, especially the bobbled early handling of the dean's hiring. Students in the inaugural class, don't forget, get a three-year tuition-paid experience.
