Cal Poly Pomona
Here's a toast to the campus vintners whose inaugural botique zinfandel rose won a gold medal in its category at the Los Angeles International Wine and Spirits Competition. The $14 per bottle rose is a product of Horsehill Vineyards, a cooperative venture between the colleges of agriculture and hospitality. The rose features grapes grown from zin cuttings from the historic De Ambrogio Ranch, which, before it was razed for development in Rancho Cucamonga, was scoured by Don Galleano, a third-generation vinter, who selected 400 grapevine cuttings, some more than a century old, and donated these to the university. A master from the South Coast Winery oversaw the crushing, fermentation and bottling of the wine whose grapes were grown on parts of the campus. Proceeds from wine sales help support a culinary garden that's a key part of the cuisine at the student-managed and run Restaurant at Kellogg Ranch.
