Medical procedures are scary enough for adults but an estimated 60% of the 5 million children who undergo surgery annually in the U.S. develop high anxiety beforehand and suffer needless pain afterward, researchers say, explaining why they'll employ a two-year, $1.7 million National Institutes of Health grant to develop a web-based program to help parents and kids. The program, in development with a company that has worked with Nickleodeon and MTV, will provide personalized information to help them manage not only their worries but also youngsters' care and healing, explaining in detail, for example, surgical procedures and proper post-op care, including pain management. The site will have podcasts and a way for parents to contact physicians urgently for help.
