Gab isn't just a gift, it also may be one of the most effective ways for kids truly to develop their language skills, researchers say, adding that speaking is a better means for this than just reading alone. It isn't just talk, talk, talk by parents, either, that boosts kids' lingo learning. Two-way chats are key, probably because they not only expose youngsters daily to 400 conversational turns on average with grownups but also because kids hear some 13,000 words this way. Chatting with kids also allows them to test and build their own skills, receiving invaluable direction and correction from adults, researchers say. The group for this study included members of 275 families with toddlers, ages 2 months to 4 years.
