Going green not only is doing good for the environment, it's also adding up in savings across campuses in the region. In Westwood, tech types think there could be as much as $2.5 million in cost-cutting if steps were taken such as: turning unused computers off; more recycling and printing on two sides of a page; maintaining (keeping cooling fans clean and clear) or upgrading equipment; and employing more advanced measures like power-management software, teleconferencing and virtual servers. In East LA, officials estimate the school has averted the creation of more than 1,300 tons of greenhouse gases by: installing a large array of solar panels; replacing blinds or installing special films to shade windows in five big buildings; putting in more efficient lights on athletic fields; increasing recycling efforts; and running more electric vehicles on campus. In the South Bay, the city of Carson gave an award to the campus for its efforts to cut electricity and water use by outfitting dorms with low-flow toilets and conserving showerheads, as well as putting in compact fluorescent bulbs; the water measures are expected to reduce use by 50% and save 3.4 million gallons annually, while the lessened power use will cut power costs by an estimated $100,000 annually.
