He's a third-year Asian American studies student with an education minor, a nifty hairdo and an unflappable mom, who, he notes, was unimpressed initially with his latest accomplishment. Only on reflection, and after calling him back, did she truly get what his next huge extracurricular role will be: He'll represent tens of thousands of young scholars, the students at the 10 UC campuses. He's the next student regent and he's trying to be unfazed himself about the huge challenges before him and the academic system, which the governor and Legislature soon will hit with hundreds of millions of dollars in funding cuts. Still, he says he's a devoted UC fan, a political aspirant and someone who vows to throw himself into his challenging work, including not just attending and voting on the Board of Regents on issues like fees and budgets but also getting out and talking to and listening to his peers. He's the second Anteater to serve as a student regent; his 1991 predecessor also was an Asian American.
