State and local health officials in California responded rapidly and well to the outbreak of the H1N1 flu infection based on their posting of timely, accurate information for the public on the agencies' web sites, researchers say. They found that 46 of 50 state health agencies, including California's, posted useful swine flu information for the public within 24 hours after U.S. officials declared the April flu-related emergency. Only about a third of local agencies performed as well, researchers say, though California scored high. Almost 3 of 4 local agencies in California -- which was one of the five states that had early, confirmed H1N1 cases -- put up swine flu info fast; just 8% of Kansas counties did so and only 18% of Texas counties had.
