From Cal State Fullerton & UCLA
To the frugal go kudos, since who isn't trying to cut costs these days? In Fullerton, two environmental safety experts reexamined the school's process for disposing of its abundant hazardous waste -- everything from lab chemicals to glues to cleaning products to paints. They tapped their own extensive knowledge to consolidate, carefully and safely, many small batches of hazardous wastes that previously had gone out in large disposal containers; with fewer of the containers for a vendor to pick up and dispose of, costs have gone down by $100,000 annually. In Westwood, energy managers are scouring the campus to learn if they can reduce consumption by cutting off cooling and heating systems as soon as buildings empty for the day and demand drops. They're installing light-miser bulbs, of course, better room temperature gauges, as well as devices to shut down hot water heating systems when no one's around. Just one shutdown of heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems in 20 campus buildings, overnight, on 13 summer Sundays and some holiday weekends and over winter break saved the university $200,000.
