Two of the nine recipients named to receive the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest science honor, are university alums. James Gunn, now a Princeton astronomy professor, and Bernie Adler, a retired Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory physicist, will be honored by President Obama in ceremonies scheduled for Oct. 7. Theodore Von Karman, a Caltech prof and founder of JPL, was the first medal recipient; folks with Caltech ties have won more than 10 percent of the 458 of them awarded since 1959.
