For health care professionals in multilingual metropolises like Los Angeles and New York, an all too frequent medical nightmare turns on the inability to communicate simply, clearly, well and swiftly with patients in need. Now, though, computer scientists, communication experts and medical folks are teaming up at the university to tap a $ 2.2 million National Science Foundation grant to develop a system to help translate English and Spanish accurately, inexpensively and fast in clinics, emergency rooms, ambulances and hospitals. The system, as envisioned, may rely both on the spoken word, typed in information and other aspects of communication, including noverbal clues, expressions of speech and cultural influences.
