With its high prevalance and the many deaths that it still causes, breast cancer remains a formidable health challenge for women and even more emphasis needs to put on developing earlier means of detection of the disease, researchers say, adding that they believe nanotechnology can be employed to improve existing diagnostic means and methods. Nanoparticles could not only help locate breast cancers but they also could allow researchers to discern their level of development and spread; they may be used to target cancers for treatment. A $2.8 million federal grant will let them further research nanotechnology application to breast cancer detection.
