It's more than a bit of a magazine gimmick, though it's worth the gander and the ponder: Who are the most powerful people and why? At least, in various given areas, Forbes.com identifies noteworthy personalities and asks them to designate, based on their expertise, the key and powerful folk. From Pasadena, two make the august company: Dr. David Baltimore, the university's former chief and a Nobel Laureate, is singled out for his influence in medicine; and as an innovator, Jim Heath, a chemistry professor, gets plaudits for his work on molecules that work as sensors and computers, as well as his scrutiny of biological systems' circuitry, in the hopes of finding a way to assemble proteins to analyze blood and diagnose disease.
