Though the eeew-inducing nature of colonoscopies belies their life-saving potential, here's another thing to factor in when contemplating or undergoing the procedure: Do it as early as possible in the day, researchers say, noting that mornings are when clinicians find more of those problematic polyps and other worrisome growths. As the day goes on, those findings decline in number, potentially because of practitioner fatigue or perhaps because the patients examined early in the day benefit from better overnight preparation. While researchers found statistical variances in polyp detection after tracking 477 patients for more than a year at one VA hospital, they noted that for disease detection, the quality of physician and care was much more decisive than the timing of a patient undergoing the procedure.
