A stem cell treatment for neck spinal cord injuries has shown promising results in tests with lab rats, sufficiently so that researchers are pressing for testing in people with both cervical and thoracic spinal cord injuries. Rats who had neck spinal cord injuries and who received the stem cell treatment had dramatically higher rates of recovery of functions of which untreated subjects lost more. In humans, injuries to the cervical spinal cord results in lost or impaired limb function, as well as bowel, bladder and sexual dysfunction.
