An estimated 400 middle- and high-schoolers will bring an odd array of devices, months in the making, to campus this weekend, intent on proving their creations can shoot baskets, play soccer or traverse a designated obstacle course. It all will be part of the Mesa Robotics Invitational at the engineering school and the triumphant teams will advance to the big contest at Legoland in Carlsbad in early December. Amid all the fun and excitement of the novel contest, of course, will be all the math, science and engineering instruction and learning that underlies the toy-like creations. Which is the point of the Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program for students from educationally or economically disadvantaged areas; the program has 700 participants in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Meantime, in Malibu, more than 200 high school students will compete via exams for cash prizes and then hear and see presentations Saturday as part of Math Day.
