The folks who oversee the state funding for stem cell research have sought to ensure California's preeminence in this burgeoning field not only with big, voter-supported spending on projects today but also on the scientists of tomorrow. Both Trojans and Matadors were recent recipients of millions of dollars in funding for programs to train future experts in aspects of stem cell research, for which California voters in 2004 approved Prop. 71. That measure allows an expert institute to borrow and spend $3 billion over a decade to support stem cell research, including the $1.6 million training allocation in Northridge and the similar $3 million grant in Exhibition Park.
