Good to see that the work, life and legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King lives on and that various campuses in the area already are announcing how they will commemorate the birthday of the slain civil rights leader. Though the federal government will take note of Dr. King's birthday with a holiday on Jan. 18, in Claremont, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, a onetime key King aide, on Jan. 27 will deliver an MLK keynote address. In Riverside, faculty, students and staff will conduct a candelight vigil on Wednesday and there will be an evening tribute program with poetry readings and a performance by the CSU San Bernardino gospel choir. In Eagle Rock, sponsors hope that more than 500 members of the Oxy community on Jan. 23 will mobilize to assist in more than 20 service projects for local organizations and initiatives in northeast Los Angeles. Dr. King's birthday, by the way, falls on Jan. 15, and, after much to-and-fro and controversy, this will be the 25th anniversary of the official holiday commemorating him.
