Turkey, which could play an even more pivotal international policy role because of its secular tradition and its geographic location at a key, regional crossroads, needs even more U.S. support, coaxing and diplomacy, experts say. They urge American statesmen to build on President Obama's outreach to Ankara, noting that Turkey could use political and intelligence support as it navigates its challenging relationships with its restive Kurdish population and with its slowly unfreezing relationships with Armenia. The Turks can be praised and pressed to take an even greater role in their diplomatic efforts to forge relationships that could abet a Mideast peace between Syria and Israel, even as the U.S. draws down in Iraq, and in both engaging Iran for greater openness to the international community while also helping to crack down on Tehran's nuclear ambitions, experts say.
