With music aficionadoes in Southern California trekking to nearby movie theaters to catch HD performances by the stars of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, why shouldn't aspiring stars of tomorrow in Manhattan and Exposition Park take part in an internet-connected vocal master class? Some will do just that on Friday, employing the Internet2 technology developed by a not-for-profit networking consortium of more than 200 U.S. universities. That project and its musical applications has gotten a boost from a Trojan expert, who has pressed ahead with musical video-conferencing applications and especially with a new software that suppresses a distracting, annoying auditory delay. The master class, with students from the Thornton school and the Manhattan School of Music, will be co-taught by a faculty member in LA who has performed in 200 roles at the Met. The long-distance musical set-up has been employed before, including in a master class conducted last fall with students and an audience in South Bend, just before a football game between the two schools. That class ended with gusto -- spirited renditions from each side of their fight songs.
