Southland scholars aren't letting the needs of quake-ravaged Haiti elude their capacities to help, with researchers in Irvine deploying their computer know-how to assist family members in finding loved ones and the campus in Exposition Park conducting a town hall tomorrow on the topic of how Trojans can aid Port-au-Prince. In Irvine, the computer science whizzes have employed their expertise on search engines to create a special cyber tool that scours available online sources and pulls their information together so Haitians can locate their scattered loved ones. The tool tracks more than 59,000 records and demand for it has been heavy. Meantime, there will be a late afternoon town hall Wednesday where concerned Trojans can learn what they can do to assist with Haiti quake relief. Among the speakers will be medics from the school who were among the first responders in the temblor-rocked Haitian capital, including Dr. Henri Ford, who is vice dean of medical education at the Keck School, chief of surgery at affiliated Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and is of Haitian descent.
