The crudely dysfunctional Griffin family from the Fox cartoon 'Family Guy' may make many viewers blanch and it certainly has riled enough folks so the network and those associated with the show have had to fend off lawsuits of different stripes but its creator says the television serial is precisely the valuable social parody that underscores the importance of the First Amendment. Emmy Award winner Seth MacFarlane told students at a recent forum that responsibility for content broadcast, published, uttered or practiced goes along with the societal protections offered by the First Amendment for free speech, a free press and religious freedom. Yes, he said, he and the folks who work with him discuss long and think hard about their humor focused on sex, bodily parts and functions and pop culture.
