Here's a practical and powerful linkage: A group of students in Glendale will launch a new cooperative initiative aimed at training them as utility workers so they can help power companies across the area fill increasing demand for such skilled employees. The 16-week educational effort, in which students will learn about smart grids, power principles and codes, safety, transformers, overhead line construction and pole climbing, is being supported by the college, Glendale Water and Power and a Foothills area public-private agency concerned with jobs and training. GWP helped push the program because it, like many utilities, needs skilled utility workers for well-paying jobs, especially as more Baby Boomers retire and demands rise for employees trained in state-of-the-art technologies. LADWP and other utilities have collaborative programs operating at other area community colleges such as LA Trade Tech.
